Balancing Legal Compliance and Ethical Responsibility: POPIA and Research Practices at NWU Online

In today’s data-driven research landscape, protecting the personal information of participants is no longer just a good ethical practice; it is a legal requirement. The POPIA code of conduct for research sets clear guidelines for collecting, processing, storing, and sharing personal data. POPIA requires a shift in how we think about informed consent, data security, and the rights of research participants. At the same time, longstanding ethical principles such as respect for persons, beneficence, and justice remain at the heart of responsible research.

This workshop aims to engage internal stakeholders at NWU within Research and Innovation in a discussion to explore responsible data sharing practices:

It specifically, aims to

  • To explore and define the role and responsibilities of the Research Ethics Committee (REC) in ensuring that research protocols comply with POPIA.
  • To explore and define the roles and responsibilities of researchers in protecting the privacy of research participants.
  • To explore and define the roles and responsibilities of research administrators and managers in safeguarding the personal information of internal and external stakeholders.
