Prof. Liandi van den Berg (TELIT-SA) and Prof. Anné Verhoef (AI-Hub) will present a series of workshops on “AI Use in Research and Supervision” during the second semester. These workshops have been developed in alignment with the university’s AI Policy, Academic Integrity Policy, Senate Rules for the ethical and responsible use of AI (including the newly approved additional rules for AI use in research), as well as the AI Use in Research: Principles and Guidelines document. The workshops aim to provide practical guidance and critical insights into the responsible integration of AI in research and postgraduate supervision. The programme will consist of the following:

• Practical examples of ethical dilemmas of the use in AI in research
• Overview of national and international trends
• The use of AI as a research assistant and as a new research methodology
• NWU’s policies, rules, principles, and guidelines for the use of AI in research and supervision

The goal of these workshops is to equip researchers, supervisors, postgraduate students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to use AI ethically, responsibly, and effectively within the research environment. The workshops further aim to promote academic integrity, encourage critical reflection on emerging AI practices, and provide clarity on institutional expectations and governance regarding AI-assisted research and supervision.
